Harvest, Reviews and Sponsorship
Where do we start? It’s been a busy few months for us.
• In March we harvested our grapes
• We are excited to sponsor a Candlelight Music Series event ‘Epoch’ at St Matthew-in-the-City, Auckland
• Our wines have been reviewed and awarded
CANDLELIGHT MUSIC SERIES
Boulder Bay Wines is excited to embark on its first sponsorship. On Saturday 8 June Boulder Bay Wines will be sponsoring a Candlelight Music Series concert ‘Epoch’ featuring Josh Clark along with other accomplished guest vocalists and musicians. The concert is being held at the iconic St-Matthew-in-the-City, Auckland, and will take the audience on a wonderful musical journey – from Bach and Chopin to Prince, Gregory Porter and Luther Vandross. Boulder Bay will be providing a selection of its wines which will make a great night greater!
THE REAL REVEW – NORTHLAND SPOTLIGHT
Bob Campbell ONZM MW is one of only two New Zealanders in the world to hold the Master of Wine qualification. In addition to wine education Bob makes a living from wine writing and as a public speaker. He is the wine columnist for Air New Zealand’s in-flight magazine “Kia Ora” and Business Desk.
As part of a regional spotlight article for The Real Review, Boulder Bay recently had the legendary wine master Bob Campbell taste and review our wines.
Below are his tasting notes and awards for our wines.
We’re pretty pleased…
Rosé 2023 – AWARDED 92 / 100
A pretty, pale pink hue. Dry and seductively fruity Rosé with raspberry, strawberry and chantilly cream flavours (and texture in the case of the cream). Crisp, fresh wine
Ruby Chilled Red 2023 – AWARDED 91 / 100
Light, fresh Rosé with an initial kiss of sweetness that is restrained by tangy acidity to give a silky off-dry finish. An ethereal wine with delicacy and charm. Made as a “chilled red” – 20 minutes in the fridge before serving
Syrah 2020 – AWARDED 88 / 100
Medium-bodied red with plum, spice, raspberry, black and white pepper, liquorice, and spicy oak flavours that need a little time to mellow. Can be appreciated now but should mellow nicely with bottle age
PICK OF THE BUNCH
Our 2024 harvest took place on the morning of Saturday, 23 March. We had fourteen pickers who were made up of employees, family, and neighbours. We nailed the pick in four hours!
The team picked 2810 kgs of superb Syrah grapes. By complete coincidence this was the exact amount picked last year and will translate to 1965 litres of wine, or 2633 bottles. The grapes were in perfect condition, with a tested brix level of 24.3. Interestingly, feedback from around the country suggests that this year many nation-wide vineyard harvests produced great quality grapes, though less quantity. Maybe they’ve realized we’re on to something!
